John Halcrow, Managing DirectorJohn Halcrow commenced his seagoing career with Blue Star Line in 1976 attending Aberdeen Technical College and subsequently South Shields Marine and Technical College completing his cadetship in 1980.
He served on reefer ships trading principally between Central/South America the US Gulf and Europe before leaving Blue Star and returning to Shetland at a time when major oil industry projects were getting underway. |
He worked onshore for a period, both self-employed and with plant hire contractors providing services to the major infrastructure projects being constructed at that time, notably the Sullom Voe Oil Terminal and the new Lerwick Power Station. He was soon however back offshore working firstly with Schlumberger Oil Services on the Ninian Central oil platform, and later back at sea with Offshore Marine on their offshore support vessels.
John joined Shetland Towage in 1981, serving initially as 2nd and later as Chief Engineer, gaining his Class 1 Motor certificate in 1994. He has served on conventional twin screw, ASD and Voith Schneider tugs ranging in power from 3,000 – 6,600kw and 45 - 90t bollard pull.
In 2002 John formed Shetland Maritime Ltd a marine consultancy and survey company based in Shetland which undertakes a range of marine services, particularly the offshore support industry. With the formation of Shetland Marineco Ltd he has been increasingly involved with the commercial and legislative aspects of shipping and offshore services. He gained an Advanced Diploma in Tanker Chartering from the Institute of Chartered Shipbrokers in 2011, and was awarded the Kennedy Marr Prize for the highest score in the Offshore Support Industry Professional Qualifying Examinations.
A Fellow of the Institute of Chartered Shipbrokers he is currently the Lead Examiner and Course Tutor for their Offshore Support Industry programme.
